10 Music Videos That Could Be Horror Movies
2. Skrillex - First of the Year (Equinox)
In the horror tradition of I Spit on Your Grave and The Last House on the Left, the music video for Skrillex’s dubstep standout features a victim turning the tables on her attacker.
A sleazy man in a dirty mac follows a skipping girl through desolate back streets. Viewer discomfort increases when he follows her down to a building’s basement, pouring chloroform on a rag. However, the girl uses erratic but precise hand gestures to manipulate the pervert’s body, flinging him around with ease.
After the pervert is slain, the source of the girl’s supernatural power is revealed to be a stretched black demon, which controls her like a golem. The video ends with the girl adding another strike to a wall full of tally marks.
First of the Year is a fully realised revenge horror lasting just over three minutes. However, the little girl and her demon, evidenced by the body count tally, are not finished with their hunt. Under the right writing team, this video could be expanded into an entire series of horror movies, one where audiences cheer the slaying monster on to an extent they never have before.
