10 Musical Artists Who Never Got To Become Superstars

7. Anthony Phillips - Genesis

For all of the prog rock that was running amok during the early '70s, Genesis had a bit of a shaky start compared to their contemporaries. Though bands like Yes and Pink Floyd managed to do alright on their first few releases, it wasn't until they were a few albums in before Peter Gabriel and Tony Banks managed to get to the peak of their powers. After shades of brilliance on Trespass though, the dead weight came at the expense of one of the integral members of the band.

Aside from a few contributions in the beginning, much of the band's first outings were started by Anthony Phillips, who played lead guitar and wrote most of the material. During the touring for Trespass though, Anthony started to get bits of stage fright before going onstage, which led to him suffering panic attacks and near paralysis before gigs.

It got so bad to the point where Anthony would suddenly go blank in the middle of shows, letting muscle memory take over before eventually making his way through the rest of the set. While the barebones of success seemed to be working out, Phillips jumped ship for his health just before going into creating classics like Selling England by the Pound and The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway. As much as the stage life isn't cut out for everyone, Phillips probably couldn't have picked a worse time to call it a day.
