2. Awaken My Love - Childish Gambino
Donald Glover was a bold new talent at the start of the 2010's. He had a fantastic starring role on Community, had a few comedy specials under his belt, and was riding high thanks to his rap project under the name Childish Gambino.
Then in 2014, things had gone quiet on the musical front for Glover. While many people assumed he was devoting more time to other creative ventures, 2016 rolled around and out came "Awaken My Love." And this was NOT rap. The whole album was drenched in neo-soul and featured Glover singing all throughout the track listing.
However, the album was DAMN GOOD.
The sound of the album was on par with the soul music of the 70's. It was as if Funkadelic and Earth Wind and Fire had a baby, and brought this funky goodness into the world. From the bombastic opener "Me and Your Mama" to the bone-chilling "Terrified," you'd be hard-pressed to find a flaw anywhere on this album.
It showed that Glover could juggle his many endeavors and make delivering these amazing songs look easy. A must listen for any soul fan, and a strong contender for album of the decade.
