10 Musical Left Turns NOBODY Saw Coming
1. Kid A - Radiohead
Radiohead's music has never fit in a neat box. Towards the end of the 90's, they released what many hail as their masterpiece: Ok Computer. The album defined rock at the end of the 90's and signaled where Radiohead could go in the 2000's.
Then everyone turned on the first song on Kid A and were absolutely stunned. From the word go, this album is far from alt rock. In lieu of crunchy guitars, the band implemented synths and electronic sequencers to create a deliberately disjointed sound for their new material.
The album opener "Everything In Its Right Place" builds with an ominous gloom, while songs like "Idioteque" makes you feel like you have a front row seat as the world dies from nuclear winter. Radiohead's typical sound can be found on "How to Disappear Completely," but the dramatic string arrangements certainly gives the track an unsettling vibe.
In terms of songwriting, Kid A took rock music into places that it had never been before and broadened the musical landscape for future bands to explore. For an album so cold and calculated, it does a great job at showing the humanity of Radiohead as some of the greatest artists of the modern age.
