10 Musical Shifts That Fell Flat On Their Face
4. Path of Totality - Korn
There’s an entire generation of metal musicians who owe their careers to Korn. Coming in the mid ‘90s, these guys from Bakersfield shocked the music world with some of the most visceral music in metal history that ended up igniting the spark of nu metal. As the years went on though, Korn ended up getting into some really bad habits.
While the band has started to improve as of late, many fans have still not forgiven them for Path of Totality. In a bold new shift, Korn decided to use their next record to hook up with a bunch of dubstep producers, which went about as well as you'd expect.
It doesn’t sound all that bad on the surface, with most nu metal bands employing DJs, but the electronic soundscapes end up overtaking all of the menace that this band has.
Instead of having two disparate styles bouncing off each other, the way the production fits with Jonathan Davis’ vocals just feel like two completely different songs being played at the same time. The band was already a long way away from something like Follow the Leader, but this record’s experimentation gave many fans a good reason to jump ship.
