10 Musical Shifts That No One Saw Coming

7. Generation Swine - Motley Crue

The dawn of the '90s revolution could not have been any fun for the Sunset Strip crowd. Outside of the sounds of grunge ruling the airwaves, any chance of bands like Stryper or Winger surviving past 1991 was pretty much buried the minute that Smells Like Teen Spirit hit the airwaves. That didn't stop some bands from trying though...and falling flat on their faces.

Which stings that much more because you can see how something like Generation Swine might have been able to work for Motley Crue. Since this was the first record with Vince Neil back in the band, they decided to switch things up by making a record that was much darker than the party anthems they were known for. Let's be real though...was there anyone looking for dark and macabre songs in the era of Stone Temple Pilots?

Actually, yes. If Motley had had the right chops to make this work, they could have easily found themselves completely reinventing themselves alongside the more aggro set of bands like White Zombie and Nine Inch Nails on the industrial side of the spectrum. For a former hair metal band though, that kind of aggro was more than they were willing to go. What we were left with was just a bunch of pretty boys that were trying their hardest to be Ministry.
