10 Musical Shifts That No One Saw Coming

8. Into the Unknown - Bad Religion

Out of all the legendary punk rock bands to come out of the West Coast, Bad Religion tends to get the short end of the stick far too often. Although they made some of their most classic records in the '90s, they were right alongside the legends like the Circle Jerks back in the day, with How Could Hell Be Any Worse? holding up as a classic of the hardcore scene. Hell, maybe the reason why they didn't blossom until later is for them to wash the taste of Into the Unknown out of everyone's mouth.

Since both Greg Graffin and Brett Gurewitz were only in their teens when they started, to see them try their hand at actual prog rock looks all the more hilarious in retrospect. For anyone who was jamming along to songs like F*** Armageddon This Is Hell, playing this record would probably make their head explode, with more synths than a bad new wave band.

Although Brett and Greg like to laugh at this era of the band now, their reasoning behind it seemed to be that they thought their first record was just a fluke and wanted to try out some new things on their sophomore record. The Bad Religion that we all loved was still there...they just had some mistakes to make before they reached their true peak.
