10 Musical Switchups That Fans Absolutely Hated
4. JT Gone Country
Much of the appeal of Justin Timberlake's early days came from how tight a lot of the production was. Ever since FutureSex/Love Sounds, the dance beats interpolated with JT's loverman persona made him an instant star amongst his contemporaries like Usher and Enrique Igleasis on the charts. When he made his big comeback though, things went downhill real fast on Man of the Woods.
First of all, the 20/20 Experience already showed Justin at half capacity, with most of the songs being stretched out for way longer than they needed to be. As if that wasn't a sign of things to come, this turn into country inflected tunes became one of the most divisive records of the past decade, showcasing much more acoustic guitars alongside dance tracks like Filthy, each of which failed to hit a nerve with people expecting the man behind SexyBack.
As much as the fans were there to rag on it, it's not like Man in the Woods is the worst album in the world. Aside from a chance pairing with Chris Stapleton, it's just entirely skippable, with most of these songs feeling like they're suited much better to a side project than to the proper Justin record schedule. Kudos to JT for at least trying, but you can miss out on every track on here and miss nothing of value in his catalog.
