10 Musicians That Got Fired From Huge Bands

9. Dennis DeYoung - Styx

For a good portion of critics, Dennis DeYoung is the reason why Styx never actually reached their potential. Even though he had his fair share of hits under his belt like Come Sail Away, DeYoung's theatrical vision for the band and grating voice tended to hit the exact wrong note with the reviewer crowd, turning them into one of the worst reviewed bands to come out of the '70s. Dennis was the boss though, and the Styx reunion that the fans wanted ended with the rest of the band revolting against their creator.

When the guys were preparing to go on a new tour at the start of the '00s, Dennis was suffering from fatigue from being out on the road for so long, becoming light sensitive and not really wanting to commit to a full tour of constant shows day in and day out. The rest of the band needed to play their music though, and Dennis saw his band get taken away from him, never thinking that the rest of the guys would perform without him.

This wasn't the first time that Dennis got fired though, with tension rising during the Kilroy Was Here tour and Tommy Shaw leaving in a huff to form Damn Yankees and leaving the rest of the band high and dry. No band can really be called a true democracy all of the time, but there comes a point when you have to put the dictator in their place, and if they don't give up the reigns, you'll have to cut them loose.
