10 Musicians That Got Fired From Huge Bands
5. Franz Stahl - Foo Fighters
For the past 20 years, Dave Grohl has pretty much carved out a niche for himself as one of the single nicest people in rock and roll. As the Foo Fighters have gone on for the past few years, it's almost difficult not to have a good time seeing him do his thing, being just as enthusiastic about his music as he was when he first started playing. And it's good that he has that impression now because the first incarnation of the band was not the most functional band at the best of times.
During the recording of the Colour and The Shape, the band had already lost drummer William Goldsmith when Dave rerecorded his drums without him knowing it. After that was water under the bridge, Pat Smear announced he was quitting because he didn't want to deal with the touring life anymore. Dave had just the guy to fill his shoes though, with Franz Stahl being more than happy to take over, being a lifelong friend of Dave from back in the day when they were both in the band Scream.
It seemed like everything was falling into place, until it came time to actually write music, with Franz never really fitting into the band's creative process and the chemistry not quite gelling when they went into the studio. After a few great years on the road, Dave had to ask his friend to leave the band, eventually making There is Nothing Left to Lose as a three piece. Chris Shiftlett would be brought in later down the line as the next Foos guitarist, but it looked like the band was on extremely shaky ground going into the new millennium.
