10 Musicians That Got Fired From Huge Bands
2. Dave Mustaine - Metallica
The whole idea for some rock stars to get a little bit out of hand while on the road is nothing new at this point. If you know anything about party animals like Keith Moon or Joe Walsh, you know that there's a fair bit of debauchery that goes on whenever some rock stars leave the stage for the night. There comes a moment where you have to draw the line though, and Dave Mustaine found himself on the wrong end of that argument when he made his way to New York City with Metallica.
Then again, it makes zero sense that Metallica let Mustaine go for drinking too much, since they were garnering the nickname Alcoholica around the same time for how much liquor they could go through. It's all about how you handle it though, and the dark side of Dave made for too much when they made their way to the East Coast from California, trashing people's houses and getting the band into some pretty hairy situations before signing a record deal.
By the time they got to meet with Johnny Z at Megaforce Records, Dave was given a bus ticket back home to the West Coast, where he started to plan his scheme to get back at them by forming the thrash band Megadeth. This might not have been the most wholesome story for Mustaine to deal with, but if it meant that we got two of the greatest thrash bands in history out of the deal, it might have been a fair trade.
