10 Musicians That Got Seriously Injured Onstage

8. Gene Simmons Gets Lit Up

There's a good chance that some people who come to see KISS for the first time are almost considering the music as an afterthought. Even with some incredible hard rock gems under their belt, their live set is almost secondary to the songs some of the time, from the levitating drum kit to Gene Simmons spewing blood from his mouth halfway through the show. KISS may be the ultimate rock and roll circus, but that doesn't mean everything was that practical in the early days.

When the band were shown the effect involving someone breathing fire, Gene was the first one to volunteer to be the one to do it, looking to soak up the time in the center of the stage. The effect does involve some pretty close attention to detail though, and Gene accidentally managed to swallow a mouthful of kerosene halfway through the set when he was supposed to be saving it for the effect.

Even though he needed to get part of his stomach pumped and be given medication to regurgitate all of the toxic elements from his body, this was far from the last time that Gene had a run in with the fire effect. When bringing the rock and roll mayhem to the club scene, Gene originally did the fire effect and continued on without the set without realizing that his hair was on fire. You can say what you want to about KISS's musicianship, but it's a testament to their drive that they're willing to go up in flames for their art.
