10 Musicians That Got Seriously Injured Onstage
7. Pete Townshend Gets Impaled
When the Who were first starting out, Pete Townshend had an ongoing belief that rock and roll could mean more than just a handful of chords. As the band's live set started to get more and more chaotic, Pete would be just as animated as Keith Moon was behind the drumkit, pioneering his windmill technique and bouncing around the stage to let out his pent up energy. That windmill trick can come back around though, and it made for one of the more gruesome onstage incidents that the band would ever face.
For all of the drum kits that have been demolished by Moon over the years, Pete actually became much more unstable from time to time as well, never knowing just how much damage he would do to his guitar. In the process of torturing his instrument one night though, Pete looked down at his hand and realized that he had impaled himself, with the whammy bar going right through his hand.
That's not going to stop the guy who made Tommy though. Not even batting an eye, Townshend just took the whammy bar and yanked it out of his hand and continued on going with the rest of the show until finally seeking medical attention once the performance was over. It might not make for the greatest visual show or anything, but Pete's belief in the power of the music might give you just the adrenaline rush that you need to power through.
