10 Musicians Who Almost Joined The Wrong Band
5. Joe Satriani - Deep Purple
Though Deep Purple are known as one of the greatest bands in hard rock, their ability to keep a lineup together had plagued them since their inception. However, things seemed to be turning a corner as the 80's rolled around, with classic members Ian Gillan, Roger Glover, Ian Paice, Richie Blackmore, and Jon Lord joining forces once again. Then again, old habits tend to always flair up.
As the band were in prime form for the better part of a decade, growing tensions in the group reached a high yet again on the touring cycle for the band's 1993 release The Battle Rages On. After a show in Finland, Blackmore packed up his guitar and left the band for good, leaving the band with scheduled dates and no guitarist.
In a brilliant display of damage control, the band brought in guitar virtuoso Joe Satriani to fill on the last run of dates through Japan and Europe. While the door was open for Satriani to come on permanently, his commitment to his record label prevented him from working with the band in any other professional capacity. Even though Deep Purple picked up guitar technician Steve Morse, the days of Satriani as a potential guitarist for Purple cannot be forgotten.
