10 Musicians Who Hate Their Own Songs

7. Lorde - Royals

Artists hating their early work seems to be somewhat of a recurring theme in this list. Lorde's debut single Royals took the pop world by storm in 2013, garnering widespread critical acclaim, shooting up the charts, and launching Lorde's career into the stratosphere.

It is still remembered as one of the finest tracks to come out that year, but the singer herself does not remember it that fondly, going as far as to compare it to a "ringtone from a 2006 Nokia". Can you imagine your old Nokia 3310 vibrating to that smooth hip hop beat... in polyphonic.

"I listen to people covering the song and putting their own spin on it — and I listen to it in every single form except the original one I put out — and I realize that actually it sounds horrible," she said while talking to the Daily Record. "None of the melodies are good. It's disastrous. Awful."

That is some harsh self-criticism, and she should probably go a bit easier on herself. After all, she was only seventeen when she recorded Royals. What were the rest of us doing at 17?
