10 Musicians Who Have Joined Multiple Bands
4. Maynard James Keenan
With metal struggling to find an audience in the late 90's, Tool came in like a wrecking ball to stomp out the rest of their metal brethren. Though each member brought something unique to the musical haze, Maynard James Keenan's voice was always the brutal force that made you stand at attention whenever any Tool song blared out of the speakers.
While Keenan's pipes have served him well in Tool's mix of prog-metal chaos, his time working with guitarist Billy Howerdel in A Perfect Circle gives audiences a different look at what makes Maynard tick. Tool is a band that thrives on a more brutal presentation in their delivery, while A Perfect Circle has a more eerie ethereal bent to their music inspired by bands like The Cure. When Tool were going through a transitional period with their album Lateralus, A Perfect Circle gave Keenan a chance to experiment in softer musical passages like on songs like "Weak and Powerless" and the immaculate cover of "The Nurse Who Loved Me."
Even without the pummeling riffs, Keenan's work with his tertiary outfit Puscifer offers elements of trip hop as well as industrial music into his array of styles. Throughout each of these projects, the listener gets to see Maynard at his moodiest, most forceful, and above all most authentic as a musician.
