10 Musicians Who Have Joined Multiple Bands

2. Ronnie James Dio

For years, the name Ronnie James Dio has been echoed within the hallowed halls of hard rock. His impressive vocal range has made for some of the greatest power metal the world had ever heard in his namesake band Dio. But that's not where Dio got his start.

Appearing first in the hard rock group Elf, Dio quickly caught the eye of Ritchie Blackmore, who asked Dio to join his new band Rainbow after his departure from Deep Purple. Together, Rainbow's initial offerings remain some of the most extravagant metal music ever to be released. With Dio's name cemented in hard rock, he then ventured even further into legendary status when he got the call to join Black Sabbath after Ozzy departed for a solo career. Though many fans were skeptical at first, Dio's presence on songs like "Heaven and Hell" and "The Mob Rules" gave Sabbath a new life as they made their way into a new era.

Even when leading the group, Dio kept busy with multiple guest appearances as he teamed up with fellow hard rockers like David Coverdale as well as starring and performing in Tenacious D's The Pick of Destiny film project. Known all around the scene as one of metal's most genuine performers, Dio gave metal music and the world something that was indefiniable.
