10 Near Perfect New Wave Albums With One Bad Song

7. Songs From The Big Chair - Tears For Fears (1985)

The second album from Tears For Fears, was a tour de force.

It opened up with Shout, a number that ripped through the charts and became one of the most recognisable synth-pop singles of the decade. The Working Hour, followed things up with some good old '80s saxophone - the kind you get during movies, when the lead character stares listlessly through a rain spattered window. We then move onto, Everybody Wants To Rule The World. It's a song that perfectly encapsulated the go-get-em attitude of the decade. With a focus on consumerism, 'yuppies' would run around with flashy sports cars and thousand dollar watches. Either you got on board or you fell by the way side.

The closing song, Listen. was a weird fusion of new-world, choral and synth pop music, all explored through a prog lens. It's the group's most experimental song and has some damn interesting moments. The synth and guitar melodies combine to create an evocative and introspective mood.

The one criticism to throw at this record is that there's one too many slow burners. I Believe, was a piano driven ballad, which ended with another dose of triumphantly sleazy sax. Although it became one of the albums more popular tracks, it grinds the momentum to a holt.
