10 Near Perfect New Wave Albums With One Bad Song
6. Sweet Dreams (Are Made Of This) - Eurythmics (1983)
There's nothing that comes close to Annie Lennox's soul-enriching vocals. The Eurythmics weren't just a band who got lucky with a few catchy synth melodies. Dave Stewart, was a master programer; creating textured and intricate drum beats and layered melodies, that formed the perfect foundation for Lennox to exhibit her vocal talents on.
Although their first record received little attention, their second was masterful. The title track, is the defining legacy of this group. Testimony to the tracks allure, it can be transposed to any genre or style and still sound brilliant. Just take a listen to Marilyn Manson's horror-rock cover from 1995.
It's tempting to jump straight to this number, but it's worth working your way through the rest of the track list. Wrap It Up, is driven along by a murky synth line, with Lennox sounding reminiscent of Grace Jones. This Is The House, hears the Eurythmics, incorporate a Talking Heads approach to writing intertwining melodies. And that's just the start... , this is an album rooted in distinctly filthy synth-bass and ominous undertones.
But the second track could have been cut. The Walk, suffered from a plastering of Madness style trumpet, which only comes-off as jarring. You'll be cursing the trumpet player for tarnishing the entire song.
