10 Near Perfect New Wave Albums With One Bad Song

5. A Flock Of Seagulls - A Flock Of Seagulls (1982)

A Flock Of Seagulls are best remembered for Mike Score's ridiculous hair cut... , and their hit, I Ran. Their reputation has been overshadowed by that blonde mullet/emo-fringe disaster... , but for all their attention grabbing gimmicks, they had a solid body of work. To enjoy many of these bands, you have to accept that bizarre outfits and nonsensical wordplay were all part of the package. Once you get past that, it will open up a realm of musical wonder.

Their debut album was a classic. Despite any preconceptions of what they might sound like, they're surprisingly guitar orientated. The opening two tracks, are both, driven by several layers of intertwining guitar lines. Space Age Love Song, in particular, sounds like something that could have been written during the indie rock revival of the 2000s. Your mind immediately jumps to Temper Trap's Sweet Disposition.

Telecommunication is where the album loses you slightly. The beat is grating, and the vocals follow that kind of robotic style of singing, that was all the range in the '80s. If you push on through this number, however, you'll find the album redeems itself with the moody bass line on Standing In The Doorway.
