9. The Underside Of Power - Algiers (2017)
Fusing gospel with an industrial take on post punk, Algiers created a sound of unique power on the second record. Walk Like a Panther will grab you by the face and scream at you until you listen. It's chaotic, alarming, soulful and filled with rage. It's one hell of an opening to a record.
The group hail from Atlanta, Georgia, and take their name from a region known for its struggle against colonialism. And with that in mind, it wont come as a surprise that their lyrics rail in the defence of a number social causes. First on their list is racism.
Cleveland is a gospel infused powerhouse, that sweeps you up in emotion. But the crashing dance beat of the industrial drums, transcends the sound above any gospel number you've heard before. Franklin James Fisher shines a harsh light on the still present race tension in America: "It's been the same evil power since in '63" he cries out in a tortured pain. Death March throws you another curve ball. Like a track played by a group of wasteland rockers from a Mad Max-esque hell scape, it has a groove from another reality.
Although Algiers are still in the very early stages of fine tuning their sound, it's damn exciting to hear what they have to offer.
