10 Near Perfect Post Punk Albums

8. Silence Yourself - Savages (2013)

Savages' second record came out at time when the second post punk revival had barely begun to rear its anti-authoritarian head. Critics originally praised the record's overall sound but marked the group as missing the post punk revival of the 2000s by a decade. In retrospect, we can praise them for spearheading the new one...

Frontwomen Jehnny Beth, embodies the same kind of bitter anxiety of Joy Division's Ian Curtis - updating the the causes of concern, inline with the times, however - at the same time she carries the furious confidence of Siouxsie Sioux. It's a potent mix.

What you realise when listening to this album, is almost anything could be happening behind the vocals and you'd still be transfixed: such is the captivating allure of Beth's voice. Strife, drives forward with a grungy guitar riff, and a thundering bass, but once the vocals come in, all your focus is diverted. The rest of the album follows suit. The touches of vibrato she throws in, the hints of straying off key and all the crooning, ominous power she's able to transfer, is nothing short of mesmerising.
