7. Women In Music Pt. III - Haim (2020)
Combing the soulfulness of Joni Mitchell with the catchy pop hooks of Shania Twain, Haim have carved out their place in the halls of rock music. Their third album is rooted in the folk-rock foundation the three sisters are inspired by, but they pull in more elements of R&B, alongside their usual pop-centric twists.
Up From A Dream is likely to divide opinion; the rumbling bass line feels a little too reminiscent of Tame Impala's Elephant - not helped by the inclusion of some psychedelia laced guitar. But in the same breath, it's intriguing to hear them explore the psychedelic side of rock.
Don't Wanna, is a classically brilliant pop rock track. It's the kind of song the sisters have perfected. It's as catchy as The Wire and as strut inducing as Want You Back, but it's far more understated than both. Then we have 3 AM, which hears the group channel a touch of Childish Gambino, while adopting some Michael Jackson-esque vocal melodies.
But the unrivalled highlight is All That Ever Mattered. It's such a strange mixing of styles, you're not really sure how to categories it. What starts off as an electrified R&B track, morphs into something truly unique, with Jack White-esque guitar. There's also a bizarre banshee scream throughout which could have very easily ruined the whole song, but somehow it works...
