10 Near Perfect Rock Albums Of The 2020s
6. Seek Shelter - Iceage (2021)
The fifth record from Nordic band, Iceage, might not be as innovative as some of their earlier works, but it nevertheless is a solid entry into the world of 2020s rock.
If there was an overriding concept for this album, it was to explore the most loved genres and moments in rock history. Out of the door the group flaunt an Oasis inspired riff, before folding in lyrical melodies preaching hope after heartache. Vendetta, is so reminiscent of the Madchester era, you wouldn't be surprised if Bez made a guest appearance on the maracas. Drink Rain becomes a jazzy romp, blending the kind of romantic ballads Pete Doherty used to write, with the breathiness of Bryan Ferry. There's hints of the brooding frontman, Elias Rønnenfelt, emulating Nick Cave on Gold City - a gothic blues ballad, driven by punchy piano. It's not the first time the group have dipped their toes into the murky world of gothic post punk - their 2014 record was basically a homage to the Bad Seeds.
Although certain moments on this record feel a little contrived, there's a sincerity to the group's approach. They manage to pull back just before striding into the realm of parody.
