10 Near Perfect Rock Albums Of The 2020s
8. Bright Green Field - Squid (2021)
The debut record from Squid is a bizarre mix of post punk and krautrock. The vocals are reminiscent of David Byrne - if he adopted a British accent - with all the erratic, shrieking tropes that made the Talking Heads so captivating. The music underpinning the vocals embodies the nervous dance step, the Heads were known for. But with all the free jazz melodies and sharp key changes, you're also reminded of Snarky Puppy. These guys are tight. Tracks like Narrator demonstrate their ability to weave through intricate melodies and rhythms with a deft skill.
G.S.K is a great opening to the album. It gives you a pretty clear idea of what to expect: alluring but slightly uneasy sounding melodies, with a frontman who half speaks, half shouts his lyrics. The slightly off putting nature to the sound is also what keeps you engaged.
These guys are not as wildly erratic as Black Midi but they're not quite as accessible as Fountains D.C. They reside somewhere in between; a comfortable middle ground for those wanting to explore the new experimental form of post punk.
