10 Near Perfect Rock Albums Of The 2020s
3. Absolutely - Dijon (2021)
American singer Dijon is another artist exploring musical styles in a mishmash of odd but ever engaging sounds. 'Lofi' is the only clear way to categories his music, beyond that the task becomes difficult. Unencumbered by a need to polish everything to a high sheen, Dijon has released a debut that feels more like a heartfelt collection of live performances, rather than a painstakingly crafted studio album.
Big Mike hears Dijon amble his way through a vocal performance the ebbs and flows with the strange combination of string arrangements, and modulated instruments. You've also got the soulful, Frank Ocean-esque R&B number, The Dress - one of the more tender performances on the album.
Many Times is the single that will put this guy on the map. It's driven along by a downtempo repeated guitar riff, in contrast to some energised drums. The mix is peppered with hints of soulful piano and grungy guitar licks. The vocals become more frantic and frustrated as they mimic the confusing stages of a waining relationship. The soulful chorus is when Dijon finds focus; he's able to take control of the moment and walk away from the situation.
You get the sense his backing band are all figuring out their respective parts as they go, giving the album an organic feel. Despite all the varying sounds and influences there's a cohesion to this record. Dijon's confidence in turning his vocals to suit the mood of each track, ties everything together.
