10 Nineties Songs That Sold Over 1 Million Copies

9. Whigfield - 'Saturday Night'

It's the night of your school disco. You've got your best clip on bow tie or brand new dress from Tammy Girl. There's a plastic cup in hand, full of the cheapest lemonade the school could find and you're stood with your friends on the other side of the room to the opposite sex. Just imagining this scenario will make Whigfield's biggest hit pop into your head. It's rumoured that all 1.18 million copies were sold exclusively to disco DJs.

'Saturday Night' wasn't an instant success. Originally released in 1992, Whigfield's classic didn't make it to the charts for another two years. When it finally broke out across the world, a strange thing happened. Fans were all doing the same dance, despite the singer herself never actually performing it. The exact origins of the dance are still unknown.

In an interview, singer Sannie Charlotte Carlson revealed her belief that a gym instructor had come up with the routine and it was copied around the globe.

Surprisingly, Carlson is still active today. The singer/songwriter has moved past her biggest hit and released five albums since her breakthrough, though none have made the charts since her debut.
