10 Nineties Songs That Sold Over 1 Million Copies
8. Eiffel 65 - 'Blue (Da Ba Dee)'
So, listen up. Here's a story about a little song that has never left your head in its 22 years of existence.
As the world prepared to move into the new millennium, one last entry to the decade's hall of fame hit our radios. The Eiffel 65 single went to number one in over twenty countries, selling 1,380,000 units in the UK.
Even songwriters Jeffery Jay and Maurizio Lobina couldn't have predicted the meteoric success of 'Blue (Da Ba Dee). The colour was chosen at random, rather than being a reflection on the writer's mood. Keyboardist Lobina even suggested Jay write nonsense lyrics for the main hook. The unconventional writing style paid off. The song was so popular that it was the second best selling single of that year, behind Britney Spears debut single.
The group continued to make music until their split in 2005. In that time they released three albums, but never achieved another breakout track after 'Blue (Da Ba Dee). Despite the lack of success, the group reformed in 2010 and are still active today.
