The fact remains, as disastrously cheesy and musically apocalyptic as the song was, it had the three components of pop: catchiness, optimism and longevity. Barbie Girl will always have a place in the heart of the UK, embarrassedly tucked behind the part of it that currently loves One Direction. It takes an impressive artist to create a song like that, and one that even the manliest men will tap their feet to when they've had a drink at a wedding.
