10 Overrated Hard Rock Albums Of The '90s

7. Staind - Dysfunction (1999)

I know what you're thinking. "Staind? Who gave a crap about Staind?" and I agree, who or why would anybody care about the unwanted child of nu metal or post-grunge?

As it turns out, bloody loads of people cared about Staind and this album. It was certified platinum in mid-2000, and then double platinum in 2004, as it received a second wave of popularity, coming after the release of it's follow-up, and Staind's apparent commercial breakthrough, 2001's 'Break the Cycle'.

In contradiction to most other albums on this list, critics were steadfast in their judgements of sublime mediocrity when reviewing 'Dysfuction', with frontman Aaron Lewis' vocals coming under intense scrutiny along with bland and "annoying" guitar riffs from Mike Mushok.

The nicest thing AllMusic critic Stephen Thomas Elrewine could say about the album was "listeners, [will] likely find Dysfunction a little tedious, since there isn't a wide variety of songs on the record, nor is there anything catchy. That, of course, is a signature trait of alt-metal and helps make the record a sign of the times" which to me sounds like a man who had already grown tired of the 90s alternative metal boom.
