10 Overrated Rock Music Albums Of The 2000s
1. Kings Of Leon - Only By The Night
With Kings Of Leon’s credibility at an all time low and steadily sinking, it can be hard to remember that they were once both a critical darling and a bonafide headline act at festivals across the globe. Where did it all go wrong? Well, with Only By The Night, basically.
No one but the maddest of fans expects their favourite band to stay the same forever, but Kings Of Leon’s shift into pure stadium rock was both far too abrupt and nakedly inspired by the promise of bigger gigs and payouts. Lead single “Sex On Fire” was so quickly overplayed as to become parodic, the band’s trademark nonsense lyrics much less palatable when Caleb Followill started singing intelligebly.
“Use Somebody” sounded like music designed to be played on teen drama montages, and quickly fulfilled that prophecy. "Manhattan" saw the band way outside their comfort zone, and third single "Revelry" the most dreary track imaginable from a once-vital band.
The record was lauded and Grammy nominated at the time, and while it’s a fair whack better than what followed, it still spelled the swift end of a brief but golden era for the group.
