10 Overrated Rock Music Albums Of The 2000s
2. Klaxons - Myths Of The Near Future
It cannot be overstated how odd a time the ‘00s were, particularly in the UK. Few genres have been so dominant as briefly as nu rave, a glowband and keyboard-fueled trend that saw numerous bands spring up, briefly flourish, and disappear over the course of a couple of years.
Most of these saw little notable success; bucking that trend were Klaxons, whose 2007 effort Myths Of The Near Future not only shifted a boatload but won the Mercury Prize, ostensibly the UK’s most renowned music award.
There are things to enjoy about the album - the cover of “It’s Not Over Yet” being a clear standout - but a lot of the music on show here is downright annoying. “Gravity’s Rainbow” is fragmented and annoying, and “Golden Skans”’ piercing and overpushed vocals are nu rave in a nutshell - fine in a very specific, late night club circumstance, but otherwise not what you want to hear.
Klaxons ultimately outlived the movement only by a few years. They weren’t a dreadful band by any means, but this level of hype didn’t help.
