10 Overrated Rock Music Albums Of The 2000s

9. Kaiser Chiefs - Employment

The mid-’00s were an interesting time for UK music, when any group of young lads who could pull off a skinny tie and namecheck Gang Of Four would be given a record deal in a heartbeat. This led to some hitters like Arctic Monkeys and Franz Ferdinand, but it also opened the gates for the bizarrely lengthy tenure of Kaiser Chiefs.

The Leeds five piece dropped their first album under the Kaiser Chiefs banner in 2005, and for a while it was a sensation. “Oh My God” and “I Predict A Riot” were wry state of the nation tracks, "Everyday I Love You Less and Less" a solid entry into the breakup canon, and “Caroline, Yes” the Beach Boys response song we didn’t know we wanted.

But good Lord have these songs dated badly. If you can listen to the above without cringing, you are almost certainly between 26-35 years of age. Singer Ricky Wilson’s witticisms are sub-Damon Albarn (and substantially sub- at that), the incessant plinking piano is just too grating, and the cheeky chappy japery wears thin long before the end of the album.

"Na Na Na Na Naa", a celebration of not bothering to write lyrics, is twee and annoying, and “Modern Way” an attempt to get serious that just sounds dreadful. It’s very much of its time, that time being 16 years ago and counting.
