10 Overrated Rock Music Albums Of The 2000s
8. The Libertines – The Libertines
By the time of their second album release, The Libertines were already the stuff of legend. From the acrimony between co-frontmen Carl Barat and Pete Doherty to their quintessential Englishness fused with a spectacular, modern indie sound, their devoted fans were clamouring for their self titled sophomore effort when it dropped in 2004.
At the time, many publications and music fans went wild for it, and as well they might. There are truly top tunes on the record, like “Can't Stand Me Now" and the underrated "Arbeit Macht Frei".
But there’s a lot of pretty boring stuff in there, too, material that doesn’t even begin to live up to the fire and fury of debut Up The Bracket. “What Katie Did” is too twee for words, while “Narcissist” is one of Barat’s many efforts to convince us he’s a bright, lierate bloke with his GCSE level allusions to Oscar Wilde.
“Campaign Of Hate” is half a cracking song but comes off a little underbaked, and closer “What Became Of The Likely Lads” is a self conscious attempt for the band to mythologise themselves before they’ve hung up their guitars. It’s a good album by any stretch, but not what many of us wanted it to be.
