10 Overrated Rock Music Albums Of The 2000s
3. Muse - Black Holes And Revelations
Unlike Coldplay, Muse always seemed like they could possibly become world beaters. It’s just that, when they got there, they were near fresh out of ideas. 2003’s Absolution saw the band deepen their sound and bring in a conceptual edge to their songwriting.
By 2006’s Black Holes and Revelations, everything had become bigger, bolder, stupider still. That could have been a lot of fun, but Muse had started the process of sucking the fun out of everything they did. Lead single "Supermassive Black Hole" is essentially exactly the same song as “Time Is Running Out”, only instead of trying to be exciting and danceable, Matt Bellamy aims for drama, missing by a way.
“Starlight” is a boring ballad by a band who used to be quite capable of sincere emotion, with an uninspired keyboard riff and a space motif that didn’t need to be shoehorned into every single song. The likes of "Exo-Politics" and "City of Delusion" illustrate how far above their station these ideas are.
Closer “Knights of Cydonia” gives Bellamy six minutes to show off his guitar chops. It’s far from the worst thing on the album, but it exemplifies the problem: all pomp, no substance.
