10 Overrated Rock Music Albums Of The 2010s
8. Biffy Clyro - Opposites
In a throwback to bands of yore getting too big for their boots, Biffy Clyro took advantage of their increasing profile to release a dreaded double album. The likeable Scottish outfit had the cache and the label backing, and most importantly, a loyal fanbase who’d proclaim the bloated effort a masterpiece.
As with any double album, there’s some decent enough stuff in there, generally found in Simon Neil’s often lovely guitar playing. Black Chandelier is a standout, and bits of Stingin’ Belle take off, too.
Biffy Clyro can’t get out of their own way, though. Biblical is parodically overstuffed with weird keyboard sounds and massive guitars that drown the drums, and The Thaw ditches interesting midwestern emo for incredibly thin strings.
It’s a truism for the vast majority of rock double albums, but one disc would have done it for Opposites. To be fair to the band, they spread the good stuff across the whole hour and twenty, but a less is more approach could have made this their best work.
