10 Perfect 1980s Rock Albums With No Bad Songs
6. Full Moon Fever - Tom Petty
Even though every generation tries to be ahead of the curve, the '80s were actually extremely kind to the musical veterans of the world. Along with the new school of rock artists coming down the pipeline, this is the decade where we had people like Roy Orbison and George Harrison coming out of the woodwork and scoring huge hits as well. If we're talking about the veterans striking back though, we have to take a look at the most enduring member of the Traveling Wilburys.
Flying solo for the first time without his trademark Heartbreakers, Tom Petty's collaboration with ELO main man Jeff Lynne was a sight to behold with Full Moon Fever. Despite some label trepidation at first, this was the record that made Petty a name to be paying attention way beyond Damn the Torpedoes, with songs like Free Fallin and Runnin Down a Dream bringing the charts to a stand still.
This was also one of the few Tom Petty records that started to cross genre boundaries, with the layers of sound making it a favorite among non-classic rock fans like Rick Rubin. Then again, this is still a rock record, and tributes to the classics like a cover of the Byrds' I'll Feel a Whole Lot Better has only enhanced its charm over the years. Tom had been at the party for a while, but it's still nice to have him around.
