10 Perfect 2000s Rock Albums With No Bad Songs
8. Sea Change – Beck (2002)
How do you facilitate the writing of a brilliant record? Break a man's heart and let him roll around in the emotional mess until he's able assemble the pieces into something audibly brilliant. That was the method that seemed to work for Beck anyway.
Sea Change consisted of songs that were written after an emotionally taxing break up. Written as a means to exercise Becks emotions, the majority of the tracks remained unrecorded for several years before he took them into the studio.
Despite the melancholic subject matter, the album fills you with a reassuring sense of warmth. It certainly had a more laid back feel than Beck's earlier sound. Tracks like Devils Haircut were full of ambiguous word play and chaotic musical melodies. This was different, it's an album that mostly consists of soft rock ballads. But whether you're a fan of his earlier work or not, this album is worth your time.
The record feels like it was made for easy Sunday mornings. Stick it on when the only thing on your agenda is pondering what take away will best cure your hangover.
