10 Perfect 2000s Rock Albums With No Bad Songs
6. Lift Your Skinny Fists Like Antennas To Heaven – Godspeed You! Black Emperor (2000)
Is it a cop out to give an album containing just four tracks the grandiose label of perfect? Not when each track is over 20 minutes long it isn't. This is a masterpiece of musical structuring, erratic improvisation, and cinematic displays of audible beauty.
This post-rock album is marked by sparse vocals and long instrumental compositions. The tracks evolve drastically over their long run time, exploring different textures and moods through changes in tempo, volume and intensity.
It's the imperfections in this record that make it so perfect. There are long periods were the music seems expertly composed, particularly with all the surging string instruments swirling around. But with each crescendo comes an all encompassing cacophony of sound as each instrument frantically attempts to take control of the soundscape.
Godspeed are somehow able to capture the raw energy of a garage-band, playing as loud and as fast as they can, while simultaneously containing the orchestral beauty of something you're likely to hear from a Hans Zimmer film score.
This is cinematic rock at its absolute best.
