10 Perfect 2000s Rock Albums With No Bad Songs
3. Magic Potion – The Black Keys (2006)
At the time of this album The Black Keys were still fairly unknown. They didn't have any big singles at this point, they weren't headlining any festivals, they just pumped out solid, heavily distorted rock songs.
Dan Auerbach describes the duo's writing process as straight jam sessions. Rarely do the band go into the studio with any pre written music, instead preferring to develop improvised jams there and then. He supposably only comes up with lyrics after the fact and during the initial process will sing in nondescript sounds to find a vocal melody.
One of he advantages of having only two members in a rock band is you don't have to worry about someone complaining about their lack of creative input. These guys just bounce off each other, the drums dictate the tempo and the guitar dictates the vibe, and the vibe on this album is down and dirty rock.
This was back when the band were known for being a tour de force on the underground live music scene. If you got a chance to see these guys around this time you were lucky. This music just lends itself to crowded dive bars, with beer sodden floors and the faint aroma of cigarette smoke clinging to the walls.
