10 Perfect Albums That Broke Up The Band

5. The Colour and the Shape - Foo Fighters

When the Foo Fighters first hit the scene, the band itself was in its infant stage still. The whole thing was supposed to just be a fun side project for Dave Grohl as he dealt with the fallout of Nirvana, but exposing these songs to the rest of the world made him throw together a band with Pat Smear and the rhythm section of Sunny Day Real Estate. The Foos were always Dave's band though, and anything that comes out on a record is going to need to get his seal of approval at the end of the day.

As sessions for the Colour and the Shape began, the band was already butting heads with producer Gil Norton, who was a stickler for perfection and often called Nate Mendel and William Goldsmith 'the rhythmless section' whenever they were tracking their songs. That might seem a bit harsh, but Dave wasn't that much better when it comes to the drum tracks, having a more careful attention to detail about how he wanted the drums to sound.

Adding to the pressure on William to play at the same level as Dave, this entire project was recorded twice, with Dave re-recording all of William's drum parts by himself to tighten everything up. William ended up leaving in disgust after this, but that was only the beginning of the dark times for the Foos, with Pat quitting through the tour cycle and his replacement Franz Stahl having to be fired before recording started on the next album. Dave has always been a nice guy, but he seems much more grateful these days because he knows how dark those band growing pains can be.
