10 Perfect Albums That Broke Up The Band

2. The Wall - Pink Floyd

From the minute that they started production, it felt like the Wall was too big a project for a band like Pink Floyd to take on. Even though they had come off of amazing records like Animals and Wish You Were Here, the vision that Roger Waters had for this record was too convoluted to even keep track of, from the orchestral sweeps to every song connecting the storyline of the album together. The results were bigger than ever, as long as you ignore the fact that it completely destroyed the band.

As if the task of making an album like this wasn't enough, the band also had to deal with business from their record company, losing a couple million pounds just trying to have everything out on time for its release date. Having that kind of deadline means you have to have discipline in your performance though, and Roger ruled the studio with an iron hand, from replacing drummer Nick Mason on Mother because he couldn't internalize the timing of the song to firing Richard Wright entirely and bringing him back as a session musician halfway through the record.

While David Gilmour still had a firm grip on where the project was going, the damage it had done to the band was beyond repair after this album, with the next album The Final Cut being a glorified Roger Waters solo release before Roger struck out on his own just one album later and took the rights to the Wall with him. This might be one of the most ambitious albums to ever come out of the rock scene, but you have to wonder at what cost when you see all of the turmoil it left in its path.
