10 Perfect Albums That Will Make You Love Grunge Music

7. Purple - Stone Temple Pilots

The entire grunge scene has seemed to have a bit of a love/hate relationship with Stone Temple Pilots. While their break on the scene with Core made them the darlings of MTV with songs like Creep, you could also easily see them as the biggest sellouts in the world, coming from San Diego and co-opting the genre that Seattle was already known for. Then again, there's a good chance that even some bands from Seattle couldn't touch what these guys did on Purple.

Because for all of their grunge tendencies, this is like taking all of those tropes and turning them into the new era of classic rock, using the same styles that made acts like Pearl Jam interesting and putting amazing melodies behind them. While there's definitely some experimentation like the weird acoustic tune Pretty Penny or the psychedelic sounds of Lounge Fly, this is about as close to a mainstream grunge album you could think of, from the punk sounding guitars on Vasoline to mixing Nirvana with the Eagles on Interstate Love Song.

Now that they didn't have to worry about the poser hangups, Scott Weiland actually came into his own as the frontman he always wanted to be, strutting across the stage like an alternative version of David Bowie. Some of the more snooty fans out of Seattle may have been a little bit upset, but this is what happens when you don't listen to your critics and start listening to your own muse.
