10 Perfect Albums With Dark Backstories

7. White Pony - Deftones

As nu metal started to come into its own, life was looking a lot better for the tortured souls like Korn. By the late '90s, the inaugural Family Values tour had officially taken over the world, and all of those songs that made you want to lash out at your parents were replaced by acts like Limp Bizkit, making the whole genre seem like one big party. It may have been party time for the genre, but White Pony showed us the fine line between having fun and getting really messed up.

Named after a slang term for drugs, much of Deftones' third album is centered around the more excessive and violent side of life, which isn't too far removed from what the band were doing behind the scenes. When the band first showed up for the sessions, most of the work getting done in the studio involved the band playing video games and getting out of their minds on drugs, which eventually blossomed into songs like Street Carp and Elite, where Chino Moreno gives some of his most haunting vocal performances to ever make it onto a record.

Chino wasn't willing to just write songs about excess either, creating different characters for each song and telling insane stories that may have had one foot in reality, like Knife Party starting from the band playing with someone's knife collection while they were on a tour bus. The good times may have been rolling, but if the sessions went along any further, it was only a matter of time before one of them was dead.
