10 Perfect Alternative Albums That Deserve A Lot More Love

6. There Is Nothing Left to Lose - Foo Fighters

For a band that was only a few years old at the end of the '90s, the entire career of the Foo Fighters was always on shaky ground. Dave Grohl had already had reservations about making it a full band when he started out, and now that they had two albums under their belt, they had lost half of the band in the process of recording and touring the Colour and the Shape. Now limited down to a trio, it was time for the band to chill out and rediscover what made them want to play music.

After settling into Dave's home studio in Virginia, There Is Nothing Left to Lose is a much more natural record than what the Foos' had normally made, being very spur of the moment and Grohl even recording most of his vocals while sitting on a couch. Though you can definitely hear the kind of chill vibe in songs like Next Year, the album still knows how to rock, and the whole thing kicks off with one of the heaviest songs that the band has ever made with Stacked Actors.

The sessions ended up going so well that Taylor Hawkins entertained the idea of the band keeping the trio vibe going for a little while, continuing on like an alt rock version of the Police. The Foo Fighters always are at their best when they are larger than life, but when you take away all of the distortion, there's still a damn fine band playing underneath it all.
