10 Perfect Band Members That Everyone Forgets About

7. Larry Mullen Jr. - U2

As the MTV generation started to kick into high gear, that wasn't anything new going on behind the kit most of the time. Even though there were plenty of drummers that could give a lot of power when they were given two sticks, the mainstream side of rock had given way to the sequencers and drum machines, with everything being played exactly at the correct speed. Things were getting pretty sterile, and Larry Mullen actually brought a fair bit of humanity back into the mix with U2.

That's not to say that Larry is a sloppy drummer by any means. If you go through records like War, he can definitely play like a madman, but he also throws in things that no one would have heard before. Though they may have been played into the ground more times than you'd like, tracks like New Year's Day and I Still Haven't Found What I'm Looking For are still incredibly strange to this day, bringing in modern rhythms that sometimes feel like they belong in the realm of world music than the traditional rock and roll song.

Even when the rhythm seems a bit off though, Larry always knew just when to lean back a little bit on a song, taking these off kilter rhythms and actually being able to make them swing right in time with the delay effects from the Edge. The back half of U2's career may have also been defined by different electronic effects, but Larry will always be the beating heart behind the group.
