10 Perfect Band Members That Everyone Forgets About
6. Krist Novoselic - Nirvana
It's hard to really go unnoticed in a power trio. Even if you try to keep to yourself, you're going to need to hold almost equal footing with the rest of your bandmates when there's only 3 of you to carry the weight of the band. If both of your bandmates end up being two of the greatest frontmen of the '90s though, it's pretty easy to get overshadowed just a little bit.
Though we didn't realize what Dave Grohl was capable of until the Foo Fighters, it felt like no one really cared who was playing in Nirvana as long as you had Kurt Cobain at the center of the stage. For all of Kurt's beautiful alt rock melodies though, Krist Novoselic was the one who tied everything together, always giving the song some space to breathe and adding a slight pulse behind Dave Grohl's drums. Even when having one of the greatest writers of his generation at center stage though, Krist was never afraid to play with the melody of songs either.
Aside from some of his bass features like the opening of Lounge Act, Krist is flying all around the bass on some of their biggest hits, sprinkling some bluesy notes into the bridge of Lithium and giving Heart Shaped Box a distinctive growl by turning on the distortion. Nirvana already had kickass songs, but you sometimes need the right person arranging it to make sure even the more muted parts hold their own.
