10 Perfect Beatles Songs From Their Solo Careers
7. Jealous Guy - John Lennon
As John came out of his emotional cloud of primal therapy, he was starting to rebuild the foundations of his life. Looking to live in his house and make records the way he wanted, Imagine feels incredibly homespun, not unlike what McCartney had started to do with his farm life on the album RAM. When you've dealt with that kind of emotional trauma, you also have to take a long look in the mirror as well.
Since John was always known for his sharp wit in the Beatles, it was a bit of a shock to hear something this vulnerable on Jealous Guy, holding himself responsible for his abusive behavior and admitting that he tends to lose control. While his history of abuse of partners has been well documented, it's easy to see this as a reflection of how the Beatles ended as well, with the guys falling out hard over business at the hands of Allen Klein.
Then again, if this were redone as a Beatles track, it probably wouldn't have had these kind of lyrics behind it. Before Lennon had even thought of his solo career, this was actually started all the way back in India when the Beatles went on a spiritual retreat under the name Child of Nature. We eventually got the nature themed song with Paul's Mother Nature's Son on the White Album, but this is the moment where Lennon starts to feel a lot more at peace.
