10 PERFECT Classic Rock Albums With No Bad Songs
1. Sgt. Peppers - The Beatles
The Beatles' had gotten sick to death of themselves by the mid-60's. With bands coming out boasting new sonic experiments, the band were eager to shed their look as the moptop prettyboys who won the hearts of teenage girls. Once the band got off the road for good in 1966, they took a deep dive into the unknown and single-handedly launched the Summer of Love.
Just from the cover, you knew that Sgt. Pepper's was going to be something different based on the more classical setup. As soon as the needle hit the vinyl, some of the greatest cuts in rock music filled the room, with instant classics like the title track and "Lucy in the Sky With Diamonds."
For as poppy as some of these songs are, the band also broke new artistic ground for rock bands on each track, from the Indian meditation on "Without You Without You" to the carousel-sounding collage of "Being for the Benefit of Mr. Kite."
Even for as ominous as a song like "A Day in the Life" is, no one can deny the sheer brilliance behind the orchestral sweeps and biting lyrics. There are many albums in the Beatles' catalog that could be called masterpieces, but this one record marked a clear shift from the Fab Four's days as rock pinups to some of the greatest artists of the 20th century.
