10 Perfect Closing Songs In Rock History

7. Won't Get Fooled Again - The Who

It's a shame that we'll never get to see the Who's Lifehouse project fully realized. While the goal in the early '70s was for Pete Townshend to create the worthy rock opera successor to Tommy, the whole concept felt a bit flimsy and left the band to just salvage the songs they had written for the album Who's Next. If this is the kind of stuff that was the table scraps though, you've still done a damn fine job.

Being one of the first major bands to implement the synthesizer into their work, Won't Get Fooled Again gets its unique sound from Pete's new toy, creating a sonic landscape of sound before any of the vocals even come in. Since this is a Who track though, there's still some anger beneath the surface, with lyrics that talk about the revolution that will either succeed or just be a case of history repeating itself, if the line "meet the new boss" is any indication.

With 8 full minutes of anticipation, the band use every second they have to keep you engaged, from the amazing bass work by John Entwistle to the mid song drum fill by Keith Moon. And lest we forget possibly the greatest scream in rock and roll history, with Roger Daltrey putting his vocal cords through hell. The musical utopia that Townshend envisioned may not have happened, but for a few minutes, it at least seemed possible.
